Biblical Songs (A Song Cycle)

From the exaltation of “We Shout For Joy” to the pensive pleading of “I Offer My Soul to You” this 7-song cycle brings out the richness and beauty and poetry of the Psalms. Set for medium low voice and piano. The cycle written to be sung as a continuous work, but the individual songs are satisfying as well. I Will Sing New Songs

This fun, rollicking setting of excerpts from various Psalms is from the original song cycle, “Biblical Songs.” With a jaunty piano accompaniment, and medium-low vocal, the song begins with a quick verse in E-minor. It then modulates to E-major for the second verse. A short piano interlude carries us to G-major for the finale. The song is suitable for recital or church use, either individually or as part of the seven-song cycle.

Make a Joyful Noise

This is a setting of Psalm 100 is from the original song cycle, “Biblical Songs” for medium-low voice and piano. The piano introduction is a quotation of the Old One Hundredth (a.k.a. The Doxology) which leads to a gentle broken chord pattern in A-major accompanying a melodic vocal line. The bridge explores a meandering, slightly dissonant tonality which circles back to A to reprise the verse. The song is suitable for recital or church use, either individually or as part of the seven-song cycle.

I Offer My Soul

In this beautiful setting of Psalm 25, from the original song cycle, “Biblical Songs,” the plaintive vocal line works in counterpoint with a melodic piano bass line reminiscent of a cello, and which can, in fact, be effectively supported by a cello solo obligato. I Offer My Soul is nominally in F#-minor, but moves smoothly through various keys and modes. The song is suitable for recital or church use, either individually or as part of the seven-song cycle.

We Shout For Joy

This setting of Psalm 20, from the original song cycle, “Biblical Songs,” opens with a bouncy allegretto 6/8 piano introduction in E-major Mixolydian. The somewhat syncopated piano part contrasts nicely with a more melodic vocal line. The upbeat verses are contrasted by a short, prayerful interlude on, “May the Lord answer all your prayers.” The song is suitable for recital or church use, either individually or as part of the seven-song cycle.

This beautiful setting of Psalm 4, from the original song cycle, “Biblical Songs,” is designated, “sempre molto espressivo,” always very expressive. It opens with a guitar-like broken chord pattern in D-minor, introducing an elegiac vocal line, imploring God’s mercy. The song is suitable for recital or church use, either individually or as part of the seven-song cycle.

In this setting of Psalm 150, from the original song cycle, “Biblical Songs,” the opening maestoso vocal proclamation of the title gives way to a bouncy, folk-song inspired vivace, with a bridge section rhythmically reminiscent of ragtime. Fun to sing, fun to play. The song is suitable for recital or church use, either individually or as part of the seven-song cycle

I Will Sing of the Mercies

The song cycle, “Biblical Songs” concludes with this masterful setting of Psalm 89. The main section alternates between a strong, vigorous vocal melody and a quieter, but energetic staccato piano line, all ending with an emphatic. “Hallelujah! Amen!” There is a smoother, prayerful bridge which builds to a reprise of the “Hallelujah,” an exciting finale to the seven-song cycle. The song is suitable for recital or church use, either individually or as part of the cycle.

The Stag's Head (a song cycle)

Tomas An Buile strolled down Dublin’s Exchequer Street, softly singing to himself (“Down by the Salley Gardens….”) to his favourite establishment, the Stag’s Head Pub. His pals were all there, all singing and laughing in their Guinness and their whiskey. They sang of Nature, of faeries and goblins, of lost loves and lost ages. For voice and piano, these seven songs, set to the poetry of Yeats and Stephens, tell the story of this fanciful evening at the Stag’s Head.

This is the Wonder (a song cycle)

Beginning with the frolicking “Recuerdo,” to the jazz-inspired “i carry your heart,” the lilting, “To an Isle in the Water,” the pensive, “When You Are Old,” and the tongue-in-cheek Tango of “I Knew a Woman,” Miller masterfully sets the classic poetry of Yeats, Roethke. cummings, and Millay to new, and vibrant music. Set for high voice and piano, the variety, the rich harmonic texture, and challenging yet accessible melodies make “This is the Wonder” a perfect recital piece.

Recuerdo
i carry your heart
To An Isle in the Water

This is a fun, frolicking song that is perfectly in keeping with the poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay, as she and her friend, very tired and merry, “crossed back and forth all night on the ferry.” The jaunty, syncopated music fits the words to a tee.

This is a beautiful setting of the esoteric poem of e. e. cummings. This jazz-inspired piece begins and ends with a simple lilting tune. The B-section is a punchy allegro, highly syncopated, and lots of fun.

The poem is by the great William Butler Yeats, written in 1889 when he was a young romantic. The moderately slow 6/8 with a lush piano accompaniment convey this romanticism perfectly. Not for the faint of heart or vocal range, it takes the soprano or tenor to a high Bb, with an optional C. This song is also included in the cycle, “The Stag’s Head,” and you can click the link below to hear a recital presentation.

When You Are Old

Also by Yeats, but here an older, more introspective Yeats, imploring his long lost love, when she is “old and grey and full of sleep,” to take down his book, and remember that a man loved her. The quick, straight-forward ostinato piano is in contrast to the slow, sleepy, longingly syncopated melody. A true masterpiece.

Let’s have some fun, shall we? Theodore Roethke must have written this disjunct and somewhat risqué poem with his tongue firmly in his cheek. This song follows suit with its sultry, sensuous tango. Your audience will have as much fun hearing it as you will performing it.

A new twist on an old favorite. The verses alternate between unison choir and polyphonic parts. The accompniment is ragtime inspired, and when the shepherds feared and trembled, they really do. A fun piece for intermediate level choirs, suitable for Worship service or concert.

Benedictus
(Canticle of Zechariah)

This inspirational Advent anthem, a setting of Luke 1:67-79, the Canticle of Zechariah, is scored for SAB choir (with occasional tenor and sop II divisi for vocal range) and piano. It is in two section: a calm, lilting "Blessed Be the Lord" which alternates between contrapuntal and homophonic parts punctuated by brief piano interludes, followed by "And You, Child," a melodic canon leading to a dramatic forte climax. The range and complexity are appropriate for mid-level church choirs, while the setting is interesting enough for advanced concert ensembles.

A Grandfather is putting his little Granddaughter to bed. They read a book, have a laugh, and sing a song or two. But, as he tucks her in and turns out the light, she says, “Haven’t you forgotten something?” As the child recites her simple, innocent prayer, the Grandfather contemplates the brevity of precious moments like these, and offers up his own prayer, to guide, keep, and protect this child as she grows and faces the world. Set for SATB and piano, with optional children’s choir, this anthem is suitable for concert setting as well as worship service, and is especially effective at the baptism or christening of a child.

A remarkably unique treatment of The Apostle's Creed text. With a driving melody, tight harmonies, and jaunty piano accompaniment, we joyfully, and enthusiastically affirm our Christian beliefs. For intermediate level SATB choir and piano, We Believe in God is suitable for worship service or concert setting.

Our Father

This is an SATB/piano setting of a Lord’s Prayer paraphrase, suitable for worship service or concert. The first verse lyrics are by Nahum Tate and Nicholas Brady (1700). Four other verses are original, but in the same style. The music is all original, a beautiful, lilting melody and a thick harmonic texture, nominally in G major, but meandering through Em and Am. The piano accompaniment is rhythmically interesting, somewhat guitar-like. There are two optional instruments. An organ may be used to supply a simple, quiet harmonic underpinning to the piano. There is also a soaring flute obbligato. Note that if the flute is used, it must be played by an advanced flautist.

Scored for organ, piano, and baritone voice, Great Day is a medley of American Negro Spirituals. The piece moves effortlessly through a broad range of tempo, dynamic, and tonality. In its four movements, this piece is presented in various styles, moods, and complexities, each providing its own challenges and delights. The opening movement is very much Jazz-inspired. It begins with a pensive "lento cantabile" section, slow and melodic over broken chords. It then gives way to a quick, punchy faster section, an imaginative melody, jazz harmonies, and disjunct rhythms perhaps reminiscent of Miles Davis. The movement is rounded out with a reprise of the opening slow theme. It’s a delight to hear, and challenging, yet fun to play. The second movement is marked, "delicatamente," delicately. It features a slow, somewhat sad, rhythmically complex melody. This contrasts beautifully with a quick piano ostinato which, with increasing intensity, pervades the entire movement. Next, there is a lovely section marked, "in stile romantico," in a romantic style. The beautiful melody is presented in a style somewhat reminiscent of the Brahms, "Liebslieder Waltzer," though the harmonies are somewhat more up-to-date. Finally, the fun and rousing movement marked, "scherzare," joking! This is a light, bouncy melody over an excitedly syncopated accompaniment, a delightful way to conclude your performance.
